Whales
in McWay Cove are occasionally seen.
During the northern migration, two cows
bring a newborn calf up the coast. The
trip is dangerous as orcas hunt the
California gray whales to kill the calf.
The cows seek the cliffs to help them
protect against orca attacks.
Big
Sur is the southernmost habitat of the
great coastal sequoia sempervirens. They
are distinct in each canyon and are vital
to the coastal ecosystem.

Backcountry
Wilderness and Cultural
Expeditions
One and two-day trips
into a pristine natural setting as California
was three hundred years ago, and into a
historical landscape that spans each California
epoch since before time. You will explore the
richest botanical area on the continent, the San
Antonio de Padua Mission and the cultural
landscape of the remarkable Salinan
people, the rolling ranchos of the Californios
that were acquired by William Randolph Hearst as
a hunting preserve for his Hollywood friends,
then sold to the U.S. Military – and preserved
as a military installation since.
We will return through
the unique settings of John C. Fremont and
Rudyard Kipling (Yes, he was here to report on
the experimental farming of Salinas Valley),
Soledad Mission and the raw geology and
geography of Arroyo Seco and the mountains of
Santa Lucia.
